Mary Redpath

As a teacher I want to foster my students to be:

  • Hardworking
  • Intrinsically motivated
  • Independent learners (know how to help themselves)
  • Self-reflective
  • Curious
  • Proud of their work

I try to achieve these things in my teaching by creating an environment of shared control with my students.

 I do this by:

·        Asking them to help brainstorm on topics, give their opinions on what they would like to learn and guide this feedback into feasible learning situations.

·        Using guided discussion to help students learn new things. Giving them the feeling of achievement, thus increasing their self-esteem and participation level.

·        Project based learning; students learn to research topics, they begin to be able to decipher what information is good and which sources are unreliable. They learn new things on their own and they are eager to share this new information with teachers and peers. Teachers learn what works and does not work for individual students in different situations.

·        Guided learning centers, collaborative work.

·        Building on students’ strengths (their previous knowledge).

·        Using positive reinforcement.

·        Include students in as much of the process of their learning as possible!
