Planning and Teaching

In order to accomplish concrete goals for all your students, such as those set out in the Quebec education program, it is of utmost importance to plan in order to be able to teach. A good lesson plan should have room for you to plan for all possible situations, levels, difficulties etc… of your students and classroom. Below I have compiled a lesson plan of what I believe to be the most important elements in planning for a successful lesson. Below I have listed each of these areas and what might go under each of them.

Organization:

v     How will the students work? At their desks, in groups, on the carpet etc…

v     What materials do I need?

v     What needs to be moved, set up, photocopied etc… before class

Competencies and Essential knowledges:

v     Which cross-curricular competencies or broad areas of learning am I targeting?

v     Which subject specific competencies am I addressing?

v     What essential knowledges am I narrowing in on?

v     What professional competencies to I hope to be working on throughout this lesson?

Lesson procedures:

v     How will I introduce the lesson? (engage)

v     What questions will I ask?

v     The step by step procedure of what I plan to do.

Multi-level adaptations:

v     What adaptations need to be made for slower student? Faster students?

v     Students with special needs?

Assessment:

v     How will I asses learning in different situations?

Notes on specific students:

v     What did some students have difficulty with?

v     What did I notice certain students doing saying, that I need to take into further consideration?

Post-lesson self-assessment:

v     Did this lesson work, how can I improve for next time?

Notes from supervisor or cooperating teacher:

v     What worked, what did not, how can I improve?
